DALLAS, TEXAS (June 11, 2025) A generous donation of $95,000 from POOLCORP, the global leader in wholesale distribution of swimming pool equipment and outdoor living products, was provided to support the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas’ Safety Around Water (SAW) program. SAW, which launched in 2016, teaches children foundational swim skills and behaviors to keep them safe around any body of water. This includes how to float on their back if they go underwater unexpectedly or how to properly wear a life jacket.

“As a parent, knowing my child has the skills to be safe in and around the water is priceless,” says Curt Hazelbaker, President and CEO of the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. “This partnership is making a difference by empowering young children with essential life skills and reducing the risk of tragedy.”

For three consecutive years, the Y has been a part of POOLCORP's SWIMPACT! program, an initiative developed to offer tangible support of Safety Around Water by sponsoring swim lessons for underserved youth and lifeguard training in partnership with the Y network.  And because the summer is the busiest season of the year, POOLCORP also provided essential supplies including towels, goggles, and sling bags, to ensure all swimmers had the necessary tools to fully benefit from the program.

According to the Texas Department of Family Protective Services, last year, 103 children were involved in accidental drownings. A stark reminder that drowning is the second leading cause of death of preschoolers, second only to birth defects. Through the Safety Around Water program, the Y instructs children in vital life-saving techniques like underwater submersion, self-sufficient pool climbing, front strokes, back floats, front launches, and the 'Jump, Push, Turn, Grab' method, which entails jumping in, pushing off, turning towards the wall, grabbing it, and exiting the pool. SAW also educates parents about water watching duties, because drowning is preventable.

“The partnership we have with the YMCA is incredible,” said Jennifer Neil, POOLCORP Senior Vice President and Chief Legal Officer. “Together, we can provide more than just lessons—we can break down barriers. We are committed to helping children to learn to swim and feel empowered, excited, and confident.”

The Y also offers free swim assessments throughout the year. To learn more about how to sign up, visit ymcadallas.org/safety-around-water.
